Internet sensation Yusuf Dikec, a 52-year-old retired Turkish gendarmerie officer, won the 10-meter air pistol gold at the 2025 European Champions League of Air Weapons in Istanbul by defeating Germany’s Paul Fröhlich 17-15.
He made headlines at the Paris Olympics 2024 for his unique approach to shooting, competing without specialized gear, using everyday spectacles and keeping both eyes open.
The 52-year-old at the 2025 European Air Weapon Events anchored Turkey’s sweep of all three gold medals, with teammates Mevlüt Karaca and Batuhan Baltacı securing the others.
The event at TVF Burhan Felek Sport Hall highlighted his unorthodox technique, rooted in military.
In contrast to his competitors who were equipped with specialized gear including goggles, lenses to prevent blur, and ear protectors for noise reduction, Dikec was seen competing with one hand in his pocket and minimal gear. His nonchalant approach not only won him the silver medal at Paris Olympics but also made him an internet sensation.
In 2024, he competed in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, where he and his teammate Sevval Ilayda Tarhan secured a silver medal for Turkey. What caught the attention of many was Dikec’s casual and gearless style during the competition.
Commenting on his viral fame, Dikec said, “I did not need special equipment. I’m a natural, a natural shooter.”
