Galatasaray defeated Liverpool in Istanbul to register their first UEFA Champions League goal of the season, thanks to Victor Osimhen’s decisive strike. The goal marked a historic moment, as Osimhen surpassed Obafemi Martins to become the Nigerian with the most goals in the competition and the first Nigerian player to reach double digits in Champions League goals.
Speaking to CBS Sports after the win, Osimhen expressed the team’s ambitions and belief in their potential:
“This is the biggest competition in the world, and we want to go far. We really have the quality to make sure that we achieve this objective. It is not going to be easy. We have to take each game as it comes. We still have some games coming, and we will be ready. We will try to give our all to ensure that we make history with this club.”
Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk was full of praise for his side’s collective effort and spirit throughout the match:
“Winning is very nice. The atmosphere was great, the game was great. I thank my players. They did everything we wanted. I also thank our fans. They never stopped, we did everything together. We defended together, we attacked together.”
Buruk also emphasized the broader impact of the victory on Turkish football’s reputation in Europe:
“It’s important in terms of points and prestige. It’s important for the promotion of Turkey. The Turkish League is not being valued in Europe. We showed what Turkish teams can do.”
Galatasaray will now shift focus to the derby against Beşiktaş, scheduled for Saturday, October 4 where Osimhen will face his friend and compatriot, Wilfred Ndidi.
