Tanzania Restrict Government Officials From Accessing X

The Tanzanian government has officially blocked public access to the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), citing growing concerns over cybersecurity threats, fake news, and explicit content being shared on the platform.

As a result, only government officials, including President Samia Suluhu Hassan, currently have access to the platform.

The government justified the ban by pointing to X’s allowance of content deemed contrary to national laws, culture, customs, and traditions.

According to Tanzania’s Minister of Information, Jerry Silaa, announced the development on Wednesday, explaining that the government’s decision follows a series of cyberattacks on official government accounts.

“We cannot allow a platform that directly contradicts our laws and promotes content that undermines our culture and values. The safety and moral integrity of Tanzanians must come first,” he stated.

The restriction has driven increased use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) among Tanzanians attempting to access the platform despite government regulations.
