Ajax have relieved John Heitinga of his duty as head coach following a disastrous start to their Champions League campaign. The Dutch giants sit bottom of their UCL group, having lost all four matches, and their domestic form has been equally concerning. In the Eredivisie, Ajax are currently fourth a position far below expectations after winning five, drawing five, and losing just one in the league so far. They are now eight points behind Feyenoord.
Ajax have started looking for replacements they have reached out to former manager Erik ten Hag about a potential return. Talks are ongoing, but Ten Hag has yet to make a decision regarding his future.
Ten Hag enjoyed tremendous success during his previous spell at Ajax, leading the club to two Eredivisie titles, a domestic double, and a historic run to the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League semi finals. Since his departure, Ajax have struggled to have that level of dominance, failing to secure the league title and being very inconsistency both domestically and in Europe.
The club’s board hope a potential return of Ten Hag could restore the winning mentality and get Ajax back on track in both the Eredivisie and Europe.
