Celtic delivered a powerful comeback to beat Feyenoord 3‑1 in Rotterdam in their UEFA Europa League clash. Feyenoord took the early lead through Ayase Ueda in the 11th minute, but Celtic responded strongly before the break.
Yang Hyun‑Jun levelled in the 31st minute and Reo Hatate put the visitors ahead with a goal in the 43rd minute. Benjamin Nygren sealed the win in the 82nd minute to complete a memorable turnaround for the Scottish side.
The result was especially significant for Celtic their first away win in Europe in more than four years and came on what could be longtime manager Martin O’Neill’s final European match in charge.
In his post‑match media comments, O’Neill praised the attitude, resilience and spirit of his players.
“It’s really big, I must admit. I’m obviously thrilled for the team. There’s a bit of selfishness attached to it all as well too. That was lovely to win. Just to win away from home, but to win in Feyenoord is just terrific.”
“We played really, really well. There was a period in the game, a fairly lengthy period, where we were totally dominant, controlling the ball and exuding a lot of confidence, which was a lovely thing to see.”
“Obviously going a goal behind as well, we could have crumbled. I was really proud of them. They showed character and resilience. Then, when we got the equaliser, confidence just flooded into the side and they played wonderfully well.”
“I said to the players before the game ‘you will get a chance to play tonight.’ We took that chance.”
This victory does more than just boost Celtic’s Europa League hopes. It sends a message of belief and unity from O’Neill’s squad and gives the club momentum as they prepare for the next phase of the season.
For Feyenoord and their manager Robin van Persie, the result represents a fresh blow, the club has now lost four matches in a row. The home defeat raises pressure ahead of upcoming matches and may force a re examination of tactics and morale within the squad.
