Movie: Green Book

“Green Book” (2018), directed by Peter Farrelly, is a heartfelt and thought-provoking drama that explores themes of racism, friendship, and the power of mutual understanding against the backdrop of the segregated American South in the 1960s.

The film is inspired by the true story of an unlikely friendship between Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), an African-American classical pianist, and Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), an Italian-American bouncer who serves as Shirley’s driver and bodyguard during a concert tour through the Deep South reluctantly takes this job after his first meeting with Don, to guide him around cities and drive him from destination to destination for his shows.

The two have completely different upbringings and backgrounds. However, during their trip between cities the two of them develop a friendship and Tony learns to appreciate Don’s music, and his struggle as an African American jazz artist who loves classical music. Don also learns from Tony about the simple values of life.

Named after “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” a guide that listed safe accommodations for African-American travelers during segregation, the film navigates the racial tensions and challenges of the era with sensitivity and humor.

Although exhibited as a simple story, the film manages to tackle complex topics, based on real life events that put emphasis on the uncomfortable nature and painful fixtures of America’s history.

‘Green Book’ is able to address the complex issues while incorporating an entertaining comedic and amicable tone, due to a brilliant screenplay and well thought out dialogue between the characters.

The film’s message of overcoming prejudice and building bridges between different cultures and communities is as relevant today as it was when the events depicted in the movie took place. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding in the face of intolerance and bigotry.

Green Book” is a beautifully acted and emotionally engaging film that, while not without its flaws, delivers a message of hope and unity that resonates with many viewers
