The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a series of disciplinary sanctions following incidents that marred the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 final between Senegal and Morocco.
In a strongly worded statement released after a review of match officials’ reports and disciplinary proceedings, CAF confirmed significant punishments for both teams.
On the Senegal side, head coach Pape Thiaw has been hit with a five-match suspension and a personal fine of $100,000. Two key players, Elimane Ndiaye and Ismaïla Sarr, have each received two-match bans. In addition, the Senegalese Football Federation has been fined $615,000 for its role in the incidents.
Morocco were also sanctioned, though to a lesser extent. Star defender Achraf Hakimi has been handed a one-match suspension, while midfielder Abde Ezzalzouli Saibari will miss three matches. The Moroccan Football Federation has been fined $315,000.
CAF said the decisions were taken to “uphold discipline, respect for match officials, and the integrity of African football,” stressing that misconduct at flagship tournaments would not be tolerated.
The sanctions bring a controversial end to the AFCON 2025 final, shifting attention from the football itself to questions of discipline and conduct at the highest level of the African game.
