Police have detained a suspect who threatened schools in Lagos with bomb attacks.

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended Kosiso Ogumbo, who is accused of sending bomb threat messages to two schools in the Ikeja Government Reserved Area, GRA, Lagos, last week.

Additionally, they have dismantled a notorious gang known as “one-chance,” which has been operating throughout the state, resulting in the arrest of 21 suspects in various locations.

Reports indicate that around 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the Human Resources Manager and Chief Security Officer of the schools (names withheld) reported to the Ikeja Divisional Headquarters that they had received threatening WhatsApp messages from the same unknown number, claiming that explosive devices were planted on the school premises.

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Moshood Jimoh, shared this information during a press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja on Monday, stating that the Command quickly dispatched operatives, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU), and tactical teams, to the schools.

He confirmed that no explosive devices were found, and the schools were declared safe immediately. Police investigations led to the arrest of Kosiso Ogumbo, a resident of Okota, who was identified as the sender of the threat messages.

Although the suspect claimed to have lost his phone in November 2025, police investigations showed that he continued to receive calls from family members during the time the threats were made.

The SIM card was also recovered from him. “This individual acted alone and intentionally tried to instill fear among parents and school officials. He will face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law,” the CP stated.

In another development, the command recovered twenty-five vehicles in January 2026, including six operational vehicles belonging to the ‘one chance’ syndicate, with the command chief attributing this success to ongoing intelligence-led policing and public cooperation.

He mentioned that eight more suspects from the one chance gang were recently arrested, bringing the total to 21, along with the recovery of four operational vehicles.

He explained, “These criminals used at least six vehicles across various parts of Lagos to pick unsuspecting victims.

They deceive victims under false pretenses, rob them, and in some cases, take them to shrines in Egbeda to swear oaths, while others are coerced into ransom situations,” the CP said.

He characterized the gang as a “double-edged” criminal network, noting that victims who complied were robbed and released, while those who resisted were detained, and their families contacted for ransom under the pretense of kidnapping.

“All suspects have confessed to their crimes. Some victims have also come forward to identify them. Investigations are ongoing, and they will be prosecuted accordingly,” he added.

Among the 25 recovered vehicles linked to various offenses, including robbery, fraud, and theft, was a Toyota Camry 2007 model with registration number ABJ 582 LB, reportedly stolen in the early hours of January 25, 2026, after the owner left the engine running while entering a supermarket.

The suspect, Jaffon Godspeed, was arrested, and the vehicle was recovered the following day during a stop-and-search operation in the area. Furthermore, the CP announced the enhancement of the School Protection Squad, established by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to cover the Lagos East, West, and Central districts, with headquarters located at Ikorodu (East), Igando (West), and Lion Building, Lagos Island (Central).

The CP also revealed the deployment of the Eko-Strike Force, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), and a newly formed Nightlife Patrol Squad to secure entertainment venues, hotels, and recreational centers across Lagos.

Additionally, police intercepted three suspected vandals who removed 154 electronic reflective markers from the Third Mainland Bridge during patrol operations.

“The suspects have been charged in court,” he stated, adding that “The entire Lagos State is safe. Residents, investors, and visitors are encouraged to engage in their lawful activities without fear.”

He praised the officers and personnel of the Command for their commitment and reiterated the command’s dedication to safeguarding lives, property, and investments in Lagos State.
