On February 20, a Lagos Federal High Court ruled that police wrongly declared Omoyele Sowore ‘wanted’ without a warrant after warning him to avoid a protest, awarding him ₦30 million in damages for violations of his dignity, liberty, and movement.
The court held Lagos Police Commissioner Moshood Jimoh and Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun accountable for the abuse of power.
The human rights activist in a post on Monday revealed that the NPF are yet to comply with the court judgement, he wrote: “ CP Bozo Moshood Jimoh of the Lagos State Police Command and the Nigeria Police Force @policeng have yet to comply with a Federal High Court judgment per Justice Musa Kakaki ordering them to pay me ₦30 million in damages for illegally and unlawfully declaring me “WANTED.”
However, an Abuja court last week barred Sowore and Sahara Reporters from further ‘defamatory’ publications about Egbetokun amid ongoing appeals and a hearing set for April 14.
The order was issued by Justice J.O.E Adeyemi-Ajayi following an ex parte application filed by counsel to the IGP.
The court restrained Sowore, Sahara Reporters, their agents or associates from publishing, circulating, or causing to be published any further statements, articles, videos or related content concerning the police chief pending the determination of the substantive suit.
According to the court, the interim order is to preserve the status quo and prevent potential harm until the matter is fully heard. The case has been adjourned to a later date for hearing of the motion on notice.
