Olympique Marseille have reportedly placed Walid Regragui on their shortlist for the club’s head coach role. The 50-year-old has been in charge of the Morocco national team since 2022 and has achieved remarkable success in a short period.
Regragui led Morocco to a historic fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Cup, marking the nation’s best-ever performance on the global stage. During the tournament, the Atlas Lions defeated top-tier teams including Spain and Belgium, earning widespread acclaim for their tactical discipline and attacking play. He also guided Morocco to the AFCON final for the first time in 22 years, narrowly losing to Senegal in extra time.
There have been reports that Regragui offered his resignation to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, but the move was rejected, reflecting the trust and confidence the federation has in his long-term project. His leadership ensures continuity for the national team as they continue to build on recent success.
Before his international exploits, Regragui managed three professional clubs across Morocco and Qatar, winning a total of five major trophies at club level. His most notable achievement came with Wydad AC, whom he guided to a historic continental and domestic double in 2022.
At Fath Union Sport (FUS Rabat) between 2014 and 2020, he won the Botola Pro in 2015–16 and the Moroccan Throne Cup in 2013–14. During his brief spell at Al-Duhail SC in 2020, he secured the Qatar Stars League title. With Wydad AC, he lifted both the CAF Champions League and the Botola Pro in the 2021–22 season.
While Marseille’s interest in Regragui is good for him career wise, it is highly unlikely that Morocco would allow him to depart, given the ongoing success and strategic continuity of their national team project.
