Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has spoken out forcefully following the alleged racial abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior during Real Madrid’s match against Benfica. Drawing from his own experience playing football in England at a time when racism was far more prevalent, Ferdinand stressed the urgent need for accountability and decisive action from football authorities.
“Shoutout to Trent and Kylian Mbappé for backing Vinícius Junior last night. How are we still sitting here talking about racism? How are people trying to justify when someone says someone is racist?” Ferdinand said.
He added, “Vini is to blame? He should not celebrate like that? How? We cannot accept this. Football is the beautiful game because it is the beautiful game. But this kind of rubbish sets it back so much. The authorities have to do something. I can’t understand why people are trying to justify someone’s stupidity just because another player scored an unbelievable goal, a spectacular goal.”
His statement highlights the responsibility of governing bodies, clubs, and players to actively combat discrimination, protect those subjected to abuse, and ensure that football remains an inclusive and fair sport for all.
