The build-up to the FIFA World Cup 2026 has taken an unexpected turn after Iran failed to attend a key FIFA workshop for national team federations in Atlanta this week. The tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Iran’s absence has raised fresh questions about whether the team will travel to North America this summer, despite already qualifying for the competition.
The situation comes amid rising political and military tensions between Iran and the United States. Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj recently admitted that the current climate makes it difficult for the team to look forward to the tournament with confidence.
There have also been past visa concerns involving Iranian officials traveling to the United States, adding to the uncertainty.
Despite the tensions, Iran remains officially qualified for the World Cup and is scheduled to compete in Group G.
When asked about Iran possibly withdrawing from the tournament, U.S. President Donald Trump responded: “I really don’t care. I think Iran is a very badly defeated country. They’re running on fumes.”
As of now, Iran has not withdrawn from the tournament. Discussions are ongoing, and a final decision is yet to be made.
