Lagos Police Ban Phone Searches At Checkpoints As Commissioner Directs Police To Welcome Public Recordings Of Officers On Duty.

During a News Central TV appearance, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai directed officers to end phone searches, limit checks to vehicles, and welcome public recordings of police on duty.

“Nigerian police officers have been warned not to search any individual’s phone. Anybody can record any police officer at his duty post. As long as the officer is doing the right thing, there is nothing to fear about being recorded. Police officers can also start recording their own activities.” Fatai stated.

He stressed that professional officers have nothing to fear from cameras, promoting mutual transparency to build trust amid complaints of harassment.

The policy, announced by the commissioner who took office in late March 2026, arrives as investigations probe a recent officer assault video, with residents’ hopeful yet skeptical about enforcement.
