Alberta will hold a referendum to determine whether the province should stay in Canada or proceed with a second binding vote on separation.

Premier Danielle Smith says people in Alberta deserve a voice after years of growing frustration over: Energy policy, Federal control, Equalisation payments and the belief that Alberta’s wealth has been used while its interests are ignored.

Her message was blunt: “Alberta’s future will be decided by Albertans.”

The premier referendum question: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”
