President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a high-level delegation, including Justice Minister Lateef Fagbemi, Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, and Health Minister Ali Pate, to London to negotiate the transfer of convicted former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu from a UK prison to Nigeria under a 2021 bilateral treaty.

Ekweremadu, sentenced in May 2023 to nine years and eight months for organ trafficking after coercing a 21-year-old man to donate a kidney for his daughter, has served over two years at HMP Dovegate.

The effort, discussed with UK Ministry of Justice officials on November 10, 2025, highlights Nigeria’s diplomatic push amid domestic concerns over prison overcrowding and justice disparities.
