Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal convicted ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in absentia on November 17, 2025, for crimes against humanity related to her government’s 2024 crackdown on student protests that killed over 1,400 people.
Awami League supporters protested the verdict across Dhaka and other cities, torching Grameen Bank outlets, buses, and government buildings, resulting in clashes that killed at least 14 and injured dozens.
However, Dhaka police chief issues shoot-on-sight orders for anyone involved in arson or crude bomb attacks. Buses and government buildings have been set ablaze in the capital, and border guards are now deployed across key areas amid surging tensions. Protestors are asking Yunus to go back to USA.
Hasina from exile in India denounced the ruling as a political sham and called for intensified demonstrations.
