The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on Monday sympathises with the families of victims involved in Medina bus tragedy that claimed the lives of 42 Indians Umrah pilgrims, primarily from Hyderabad, Telangana, in a fire that charred many.
Modi in a post wrote: “Deeply saddened by the accident in Medinah involving Indian nationals. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones.
“I pray for the swift recovery of all those injured. Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are providing all possible assistance. Our officials are also in close contact with Saudi Arabian authorities.” He stated.
A Medina bus carrying Indian Umrah pilgrims had reportedly collided with a diesel tanker near Medina, in Saudi Arabia, sparking a massive fire.
At least 42 Indians are feared dead, including women and children- many from Hyderabad. Helplines and a control room have been set up for families.
Indian diplomatic channels, including the Riyadh embassy and Jeddah consulate, are aiding victim identification and family support, coordinating with Saudi authorities as confirmed by MEA statements
The accident highlights road safety risks for the 2.5 million annual Indian Umrah visitors, with Saudi data showing over 7,000 traffic deaths in 2024, often involving overloaded vehicles and poor visibility at dawn.
