Marco Silva Under Increasing Pressure As Fulham Assess Managerial Future

Fulham head coach Marco Silva is facing significant pressure following the club’s poor start to the season. With the team sitting just one point above the relegation zone, Fulham’s leadership is now actively evaluating his position. According to Jacob Ben, the club previously attempted to extend Silva’s contract last summer, but the Portuguese manager was reluctant to commit, preferring to keep his long-term options open. Silva’s current deal expires in July 2026.

Silva’s success in the Premier League has been closely linked to his possession-based, high-intensity philosophy. Several Fulham players have thrived under his guidance, particularly Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey, both of whom have become central figures in the squad.

Iwobi joined Fulham from Everton on September 2, 2023, on a five year contract. Before signing, he reportedly held a lengthy conversation with Silva, during which the manager laid out Fulham’s project. Under Silva’s coaching, Iwobi has transformed from an inconsistent performer into a versatile asset capable of operating as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder, or left winger. His development has been one of Silva’s standout contributions.

Calvin Bassey, who arrived in July, represents another calculated gamble from Silva. After a difficult period at Ajax, Bassey’s confidence and form had dipped significantly. But Silva backed him, giving him key responsibilities across multiple roles including centre back and right back. Bassey’s resurgence quickly made him a crucial figure for both Fulham and the Nigerian national team.

Despite the recent struggles, Silva’s achievements at Fulham are notable. He secured a top flight stay for the first time in a decade, achieved a 10th place finish, reached two FA Cup quarter-finals and a League Cup semi final, and set a club record for Premier League points.

However, with results declining, Fulham’s hierarchy is now seriously reconsidering the club’s direction and Silva’s future remains uncertain.
