Akwa Ibom Police Arrest Effiong For “Disrupting Public Peace,” Days After Governor Ban Masquerade In The State

Days after the Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno ordered the arrest of any masquerades found on the streets, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command apprehended David Effiong, who was spotted in full masquerade regalia disrupting public peace as he set to be charged to court accordingly

“Any masquerade found on the streets of Akwa Ibom State parading would be arrested and prosecuted.” The governor had declared.

The executive order limits masquerade displays to village squares with police approval, enforced across all 31 local government areas ahead of Christmas crowds.

However, Effiong was caught in an Ekpo costume near a Uyo police station for nuisance and property damage.

The State Police Command Public Relations Officer Timfon John in a report stated: “Yesterday, a masquerade was arrested for disrupting public peace. one David was unveiled as the human being inside the Ekpo Masquerade paraphernalia. He will have his day in court.

“The ban on public activities of masquerades is still in force and the police is out to enforce it to the fullest.” He added
