José Antonio Kast leader of Chile’s Republican Party, defeated leftist Jeannette Jara, who conceded gracefully, in the runoff election with nearly all ballots counted.
Kast in a post on twitter after victory wrote: “Thank you, Chile. Time to get to work!”
Voters focused on rising crime and migration, issues Kast addressed with pledges for a northern border wall, deportations, and stronger security.
The 60-year-old father of nine, a pro-life Catholic emphasizing family values, takes office in March amid a divided Congress but strong public support.
