AFCON 2025: Chelle Plays Down Pressure Ahead Of Super Eagles Opener

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has urged calm and focus as Nigeria prepares for its opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations, insisting his attention remains firmly on the pitch rather than speculation about his future.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Chelle described the opener as a defining moment in the tournament.

“It’s a big game because it’s our first match of the AFCON, and the first game is always crucial,” he said. “We want to start well, and of course, we want to win.”

Chelle: ‘Now Is Not the Time for Questions About My Future’

Addressing growing discussion around his long term position, the Malian was clear that talks with the Nigerian Football Federation would wait until after the tournament.

“Since I took this job, there has been pressure. That is normal,” Chelle explained.

“Right now, I am focused on the game, my players, and my staff. After AFCON, we will sit with the NFF and talk about everything. This is not the moment for that discussion.”

He added:

“This is the moment to talk about football  the tournament, the players, and our game project. We must show our ambition starting now.”

Unfazed by Ekong Retirement

Chelle also addressed questions surrounding the absence of veteran defender William Troost-Ekong, who recently announced his retirement from international football.

“Of course, I would love to have everyone available,” he admitted.

“But I trust my players completely. That trust makes a big difference. We are building something together, and the group is fully committed.”

The coach confirmed that his match plan is already settled.

“In my mind, I already know the players who will start the game.”

Midfield Concerns and Preparation Challenges

Chelle did not shy away from acknowledging logistical and selection issues, particularly in midfield.

“In Egypt, we arrived very late  maybe just one day before the match,” he said.

“If players are not available, how can they play? That is a very big problem.”

Focus on Nigeria, Not Opponents

Asked whether he sought tactical insight from goalkeeper Amas Obasogie regarding Nigeria’s opponents, Chelle dismissed any suggestion of oversight.

“We didn’t speak much about the Tanzanian players, and that’s not a lack of respect,” he explained.

“Our focus is on ourselves our training sessions, video analysis, and our playing philosophy.”

Ndidi: ‘The Camp Is Fully Energised’

Vice-captain Wilfred Ndidi echoed his coach’s confidence, highlighting the positive atmosphere within the squad.

“The spirit in camp is very high,” Ndidi said.

“Everyone is energised. This game means a lot to us  the players, the staff, everyone. We are fully focused and ready.”

Eyes on the Present

Chelle concluded with a firm reminder that the past holds no relevance as Nigeria steps onto the AFCON stage.

“This is our first game tomorrow. We are happy and focused,” he said.

“I don’t have time to think about what happened before. The most important thing is the next game.”
