A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck near San Marcos in Guerrero state at 7:58 a.m. Friday, with its epicenter 15 kilometers southwest at shallow depth.
It triggered alarms in Mexico City, halting the metro for over 40 minutes and interrupting President Sheinbaum’s press conference, while causing two deaths and minor injuries in Guerrero amid landslides, collapsed homes, and road blockages.
By evening, 936 aftershocks followed, but authorities restored power and services quickly, with ongoing assessments in the hurricane-hit region.
