Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign came to an end after a 4–2 penalty shootout defeat to Morocco, following a tense goalless draw after 120 minutes.
Morocco dominated proceedings in regulation time, registering 16 shots with five on target, while Nigeria managed just two attempts, only one of which tested the goalkeeper.
Despite their struggles going forward, the Super Eagles delivered a disciplined and resilient defensive display to keep the Moroccans at bay throughout extra time.
The semi-final was ultimately decided from the penalty spot. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali denied Hamza Igamane, but Nigeria were undone by missed efforts from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi.
Chukwueze’s weak attempt to the left was comfortably dealt with by Yassine Bounou, while Onyemaechi rushed his kick down the middle, allowing Bounou to save with his left hand.
As a result, Nigeria will now contest the third-place playoff in Egypt, a fixture few players relish, especially after finishing as runners-up in the previous edition. Nonetheless, it offers a small consolation.
Morocco, meanwhile, advance to the final where they will face Senegal.
