U.S. Sen. Hawley Presses Indian OB-GYN on Whether Men Can Get Pregnant at Senate Hearing

At a Senate HELP Committee hearing on mifepristone safety, Republican Senator Josh Hawley repeatedly asked OB-GYN Dr. Nisha Verma if men can get pregnant, following her testimony that science should guide over politics.

Sen. Hawley: “Can men get pregnant?”

Dr. Nisha Verma: “I’m not really sure what the goal of the question is.”

Sen. Hawley: “The goal is just to establish a biological reality…Can men get pregnant?”

Verma hesitated, saying she treats patients of different identities and dismissed the question as a political tool, while other witnesses directly answered no.

Hawley argued biological men cannot get pregnant, tying it to women’s health protections amid Republican calls for tighter abortion drug regulations due to reported adverse events in up to 11% of cases.
