CAF Sanctions Algeria Following AFCON Quarter-Final Disturbances Against Nigeria

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed down sanctions to Algeria following disturbances after their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash with Nigeria.

The Algerian Football Federation has been fined $100,000, while individual players have also been penalized. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane received a two-match suspension, and Rafik Belghali was handed a four-game ban, with two of those suspensions set to apply during the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

The disciplinary measures follow incidents that erupted after the  match, which Algeria lost 2-0  to Nigeria. Reports indicate that tensions escalated in the stadium, including confrontations between players and officials, as well as unruly behavior among fans, prompting CAF to take action.

The Algerian Football Federation has announced its intention to appeal the sanctions, describing the measures as “harsh” and promising to seek a review of the decisions.
