Residents of Simpson Street, by Ladipo Street in the Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos, have cried out over the alarming accumulation of refuse and completely blocked drainage that has taken over their neighbourhood .
According to residents, heaps of dirt, stones, and waste have clogged the drainage channels along the Simpson Street axis, causing stagnant water and an unhygienic environment. The situation, they said, has persisted despite repeated appeals to the Yaba LCDA sanitation team.
Speaking with the Lagos Reporters investigation team, a resident disclosed that several complaints had been lodged with the local council authorities, but no concrete action has been taken to address the problem. The resident expressed frustration that the area has been left to deteriorate despite its close proximity to key government offices.
During an on-the-spot investigation, Lagos Reporters confirmed that the drainage along the affected section of Simpson Street by Ladipo Street is completely blocked with dirt, stones, and other debris, making the area vulnerable to flooding, especially during rainfall.
Ironically, the affected street is just a few minutes away from the Yaba LCDA Secretariat in Adekunle, raising concerns among residents about what they described as neglect by the authorities.
Efforts by the Lagos Reporters investigation team to reach officials of the Yaba LCDA for comments proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
Residents are now calling on the Yaba LCDA authorities to urgently intervene by clearing the blocked drainage and evacuating accumulated refuse to prevent possible health hazards and environmental degradation.
