Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence from Al Nassr’s upcoming match against Al Riyadh has ignited fresh controversy in Saudi football, with reports suggesting the decision is a deliberate protest rather than a fitness issue.
According to Portuguese and local Saudi sources, the Al Nassr captain is unhappy with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) over what he perceives as a lack of backing for his club during the winter transfer window. Ronaldo is said to be frustrated by what he views as preferential treatment and stronger financial support for rival teams, leaving Al Nassr short of the reinforcements needed to compete at the highest level.
Importantly, sources insist that Ronaldo’s stance is not directed at Al Nassr’s management. The club’s CEO, Jose Semedo, is one of Ronaldo’s closest and longest-standing friends, and both are believed to be aligned on the club’s sporting vision.
Instead, Ronaldo’s protest is reportedly aimed squarely at the PIF, which oversees and funds the Saudi Pro League. By refusing to play despite being fully fit, the Portuguese star is sending a strong message about the need for equal support across clubs.
Al Nassr manager Jorge Jesus has also added fuel to the situation, having publicly questioned the league’s transfer dynamics and perceived favoritism in recent weeks.
For many observers, Ronaldo’s actions underline the growing tension behind the scenes in Saudi football. His message appears clear: either fully support Al Nassr’s project or risk alienating the league’s biggest global icon.
