Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has reacted to a viral challenge involving United fan Frank Ilett, popularly known as United Strand, who vowed not to cut his hair until Manchester United win five games in a row.
Carrick admitted he was aware of the challenge, revealing that his children were the ones who brought it to his attention, but insisted it would have no influence on professional matters.
“I’m aware of it. My kids have made me aware of it, if anything, but it won’t go into the team talk from a professional level,” Carrick said.
“It does make me smile, but it will not make an impact in the end.”
Frank Ilett has now gone 493 days without cutting his hair, as Manchester United have been unable to complete a five-game winning streak since he began the challenge.
However, that long wait could finally come to an end on Monday night, when Manchester United face West Ham United at the London Stadium. A victory would complete the required run and potentially bring the challenge to a close.
United head into the fixture in strong form, having won their last four matches: a 2–0 victory over Manchester City, a 3–2 win against Arsenal, a 3–2 triumph over Fulham, and a 2–0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
All eyes will be on London to see whether Manchester United can make it five wins in a row and whether United Strand will finally be heading for a haircut.
