Nigerian President Directs IGP Egbetokun’s Resignation, Appoints Tunji Disu As Replacement

Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu, a 30-year veteran praised for professional policing in roles like Lagos’ Rapid Response Squad, will take over after Egbetokun’s 19-month tenure marked by criticism over alleged abuses, promotions, and scandals.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore in a post on X remarked; “The Illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun has been kicked out, he will be replaced by the fellow at FCIID in Lagos!”

Egbetokun’s term had been extended to 2027 by a Police Act amendment, however, sources cited resignation based on president Tinubu’s directive and alleged family matters.

The move, bypassing senior deputies and keeping Yoruba leadership, has sparked online talk about ethnic balance ahead of 2027 elections, with police officers reportedly jubilant at headquarters.
