TUNJI DISU: PROFILE OF THE NEWLY APPOINTED INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE

Olatunji “Tunji” Disu, born 13th April 1966 on Lagos Island, has just been named Nigeria’s 23rd Inspector‑General of Police, succeeding Kayode Egbetokun after a presidential directive from President Bola Tinubu on 23 February 2026 .

He joined the Nigeria Police Force on 18 May 1992 and has spent more than three decades climbing the ranks, earning a reputation for disciplined, intelligence‑driven policing.

Disu holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University (LASU) and two master’s degrees—one in Public Administration and another in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology.

His training includes extensive courses in forensic investigations, cyber‑crime, small‑arms smuggling, and strategic leadership, both in Nigeria and abroad .

Throughout his career he has commanded several high‑profile units:

  • Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos – spearheaded urban crime‑reduction and rapid‑intervention tactics.
  • Intelligence Response Team (IRT) – took charge after Abba Kyari’s suspension, focusing on intelligence‑led operations.
  • Commissioner of Police, Rivers State and Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja – oversaw security in politically sensitive regions.
  • Assistant Inspector‑General, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos – strengthened investigative capacity and promoted professionalism .

Disu is known for a zero‑tolerance stance on corruption, a focus on operational efficiency, and a community‑oriented approach that has earned him multiple awards, including Commissioner of Police of the Year.

As IGP, he is expected to drive reforms, boost investigative standards, and restore public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force .
