Nigeria Lose Carney Chukwuemeka As Midfielder Chooses Austria

Nigeria have lost the opportunity to have Carney Chukwuemeka represent the Nigeria national football team after the midfielder decided to commit his international future to the Austria national football team.

Chukwuemeka, who was born in Vienna, is now set to represent Austria at senior international level and could make his debut as early as the March international window. The midfielder had previously represented the England national under 17 football team, England national under 18 football team, England national under 19 football team and England national under 20 football team during his youth international career.

The decision marks a significant shift in his international allegiance, with the player reportedly targeting participation at the FIFA World Cup with Austria.

At club level, Chukwuemeka has been an important member of the Borussia Dortmund squad this season before suffering an injury setback. The midfielder has made 20 appearances in the Bundesliga, eight appearances in the UEFA Champions League and two appearances in the DFB Pokal.

Chukwuemeka is currently recovering from a muscular injury that has kept him sidelined since late February 2026 as he works towards returning to action.
