Former Super Eagles coach Festus Adegboyega Onigbinde has passed away at the age of 88, the family confirmed in an official statement.
“WE ANNOUNCE THE PASSING OF THIS GREAT MAN, A MODAKEKE HIGH CHIEF, THE FIRST INDIGENOUS NIGERIAN SUPER EAGLES FOOTBALL COACH, FATHER, HUSBAND, GRANDFATHER, GREAT-GRANDFATHER, BROTHER, AND FRIEND HIGH CHIEF FESTUS ADEGBOYE ONIGBINDE WHO PASSED UNTO THE GREAT BEYOND A COUPLE OF MINUTES AGO,” the family said.
Chief Onigbinde managed the Nigerian national team in two separate spells, overseeing approximately 17 to 20 competitive and high-profile friendly matches. He first took charge of the Super Eagles between 1982 and 1984, leading the team to the final of the 1984 African Cup of Nations.
He returned for a second stint in 2002, guiding Nigeria at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, cementing his legacy as one of the country’s pioneering football coaches.
