Arthur Okonkwo has officially had his international allegiance switch from England to Nigeria approved by FIFA, making him eligible to represent the Super Eagles at senior level.
The 24 year old goalkeeper was born in London to Nigerian parents and previously represented England national youth teams from under 15 to under 18 level before opting to commit his international future to Nigeria.
Okonkwo began his career at Arsenal, where he spent over a decade between 2009 and 2021, progressing through the ranks from the under 9 level to the under 23 squad. Despite his development at the club, he did not make a competitive senior appearance during his time there. He later gained experience through loan spells at Crewe Alexandra, SK Sturm Graz, and Wrexham AFC. His professional competitive debut came at Crewe Alexandra on July 30, 2022.
He is currently a key player at Wrexham, having joined the club permanently as a free agent in June 2024 after an earlier loan spell during the 2022 2023 season. Okonkwo has made 42 appearances in all competitions for the club this season, recording 10 clean sheets.
His switch adds depth to Nigeria’s goalkeeping options, where he will compete with Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye of Udinese, and Francis Uzoho of Omonia.
Okonkwo could make his debut for Nigeria national team as early as June 2026, with the Super Eagles scheduled to face Poland national team and Portugal national team in international friendly matches, should he receive a call up from head coach Eric Chelle.
