The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia welcome its 2017 in fanfare on 11th September as it entered into another new year, Enkutatash.
The landlocked country located in the Horn of Africa region of East Africa, uses the Ge’ez calendar, which is based on the ancient Alexandrian or Coptic calendar.
This calendar has its own way of counting years, starting from what they consider the conception of Jesus, which sets it about 7-8 years behind the Gregorian calendar.
The Ethiopian year is made up of 12 months of 30 days each, plus a 13th month of 5 or 6 days. The 13 calendar months is a symbol of Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage and its historical independence from colonial rule, which often brought changes even to timekeeping.
With one of Nigerian popular afrobeat singers David Adeleke popularly known as Omo Baba Olowo (OBO) singing live at the festivities in Sheraton Addis, the event drew in eager crowds as he lights up the night with his infectious energy and hit songs.
Excitement built around OBO’s performance at the event set against the backdrop of the stunning Musical Fountain at Sheraton Addis.
The Afrobeat singer delivered a performance packed with energy, passion, and all the hits that have made him a household name including his record-breaking fourth album ‘Timeless’.
