A female South African Police Service officer from Limpopo, suspected of orchestrating six insurance murders for payouts, has been arrested while on duty.
The unnamed officer was arrested over allegations of murder and fraud related to funeral, accidental and life insurance policies believed to be committed for financial gain.
The accused was apprehended at the Senwabarwana Police Station during a live television broadcast. Authorities believe she was involved in orchestrating the murders of at least six individuals from different communities, dating back to 2019.
She allegedly took out multiple life and accidental death insurance policies on her victims, profiting from their deaths to the tune of over R10 million.
The situation sounds erringly similar to Nomia Rosemary Ndlovu’s case, a South African ex-policewoman who was found guilty of killing five relatives and her boyfriend in 2021.
Her victims were murdered between 2012 and 2018, most with the help of a hit man, so she could profit from life-insurance payouts.
The 46 year old was caught after someone she hired to kill her sister went to the police.
Ndlovu was also found guilty of the attempted murder of her mother, Maria Mushwana, as well as insurance fraud after having pocketed an estimated 1.4m rand ($95,000; £69,000).
The first person to be murdered was her cousin, Witness Madala Homu, in March 2012. Then her sister, boyfriend, niece and two nephews were all killed.
