Liverpool defeated Chelsea 2-1 to go top of the Premier League table, with both managers opting for a 4-2-3-1 formation. Reece James made his first start since returning from injury.
The first goal came in the 29th minute after Curtis Jones was brought down in the penalty box. Mohamed Salah stepped up and converted the penalty, putting Liverpool ahead. The first half ended with Chelsea trailing by a goal.
At the start of the second half, Enzo Maresca’s halftime talk seemed to have an impact as Nicolas Jackson leveled the game for Chelsea, scoring his fifth goal of the season. However, Curtis Jones restored Liverpool’s lead in the 51st minute with a goal that would prove to be the winner.
Chelsea pressed for an equalizer but struggled to create clear-cut chances. They did have two opportunities late into stoppage time: a free kick by Cole Palmer that Renato Veiga headed wide, and a chance for Christopher Nkunku, who was free in the box but couldn’t beat Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
With this victory, Liverpool now top the table with 21 points and a +12 goal difference, while Chelsea sit in 6th place with 14 points, three points behind the top four.
