AMORIM SAYS GOODBYE TO SPORTING CP, TO TAKE NEW ROLE AS MANCHESTER UNITED MANAGER

Sporting CP delivered a stellar performance in what marked an emotional night—Rúben Amorim’s final home game as Sporting’s manager. Before kickoff, the club honored him for his contributions, including leading them to their first league title in 20 years.

The players did not disappoint, putting on a remarkable display for their 39-year-old head coach. However, they initially went behind in the 4th minute to a Phil Foden goal. Viktor Gyökeres leveled the score for Sporting in the 38th minute, and the first half ended in a 1-1 draw.

The second half saw a feast of goals from Sporting, who netted three against Ederson. Sporting took the lead immediately after the restart through M. Araújo , and before Gyökeres made it 3-1 from the penalty spot in the 49th munute.

Manchester City had a chance to pull one back when a Bernardo Silva shot deflected off Diomande’s arm, resulting in a penalty. However, Erling Haaland stepped up but failed to convert.

Gyökeres completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute, bringing his goal tally to 53 in 2024. This defeat marked Manchester City’s first loss in 26 UEFA Champions League matches.

Rúben Amorim leaves Sporting second in their Champions’ League group and will take up his new role as Manchester United’s manager on Monday, November 11.
