Premier League referee David Coote has found himself at the center of controversy after videos allegedly depicting him engaged in inappropriate behavior went viral online. In one of the videos, Coote appears to be sniffing a white powder substance in what looks like a UEFA-sponsored hotel room. The video, reportedly taken after the Euro 2024 quarter-final match between Germany and Spain, also shows a novel, a credit card, and prescribed medication near him.
PGMOL has commented on the viral drug related video, saying, “We are aware of the allegations and are taking them very seriously. David’s welfare remains a priority for us, and we are committed to providing him with the necessary support.”
This recent video follows another recording released earlier this week, in which Coote was allegedly caught using a racial slur against former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. In the leaked clip, he reportedly referred to Klopp as a “German c” and “f**g arrogant. This incident has led to Coote’s suspension by both the PGMOL, UEFA and prompted the English FA to open an investigation into Coote’s actions and the language used toward Klopp.
UEFA issued a statement on the matter, explaining, “The UEFA Referees Committee immediately suspended David Coote until further notice on 11 November—prior to the upcoming round of UEFA matches—once it became aware of his inappropriate behavior.”
This recent scandals has ignited global fan backlash, with many calling for Coote’s removal from the game. If expelled, Coote stands to lose his £100,000 annual salary. This situation has intensified scrutiny on refereeing standards and professionalism in football, particularly within top leagues like the Premier League.
