The opening matchday of the CAF Champions League delivered its fair share of drama and excitement.
DR Congo’s Maniema Union frustrated South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns, holding them to a 0-0 draw at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium. After losing the Carling Knockout Cup final to mid-table Magesi FC, Sundowns fans anticipated a strong response. However, Maniema Union’s disciplined defensive display ensured the hosts couldn’t find a breakthrough.
Elsewhere, Orlando Pirates returned to the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time since 2019 with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Algeria’s CR Belouizdad. The South African side triumphed away from home against the 10-time Algerian champions in an impressive showing.
Egyptian side Pyramids FC showcased their dominance with a commanding 5-1 victory over Angola’s Sagrada Esperança, asserting themselves as strong contenders early in the tournament.
In a surprising result, Tanzania’s Young Africans suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Sudanese club Al Hilal. The outcome caught many across the continent off guard, as the Tanzanian side struggled to meet expectations.
Meanwhile, record CAF Champions League holders Al Ahly SC began their campaign in typical fashion, securing a 4-2 win over Ivorian side Stade d’Abidjan. The Egyptian giants are aiming to extend their record tally of CAF Champions League titles to 13 this season.
