The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia state, over production of counterfeit and expired products.
The agency revealed that this came about during its two-day operation in the state, uncovering large scale production to the worth of five billion naira.
The team uncovered large-scale production and distribution of fake and expired goods, including beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, and revalidated food items such as noodles, powdered milk, and yoghurt.
NAFDAC Director, South-East Zone, Dr. Martins Iluyomade described the market has a hub of substandard products while expressing dismay at the illegalities being carried out.
Dr. Iluyomade revealed that Eziukwu market leaders had previously signed an undertaken in December of 2023 to bring to light anyone caught engaging in such atrocities.
However the agency Director General Prof. Moji Adeyeye has vowed not to relent in exposing perpetrators of substandard goods, reaffirming the Agency’s zero tolerance for such practices and emphasises its unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health while working toward a permanent solution to the problem of counterfeit products in the market.
