Crystal Palace took an early lead through Jean-Philippe Mateta. Arsenal tried getting back into the game in the first half through Leandro Trossard’s corner, which was cleared off the line by Crystal Palace’s defense, and Raheem Sterling’s free kick, which was kept out by Dean Henderson.
Arsenal’s head coach, Mikel Arteta, brought in Martin Odegaard and William Saliba in the second half, which gave Arsenal more creativity in midfield and attacking threats in set pieces.
Arsenal broke Crystal Palace’s defense nine minutes after the start of the second half, thanks to a well-taken finish by Gabriel Jesus. Arsenal doubled their advantage in the 73rd minute through a controversial goal by Gabriel Jesus. Many felt it was offside, including Crystal Palace coach Oliver Glasner at full-time, who told Sky Sports, “It was offside.” However, the Carabao Cup doesn’t have VAR in the quarter-finals, so the authenticity of the goal couldn’t be established.
Jesus completed his hat-trick in the 81st minute after a precise pass by Odegaard, which saw him through on goal with Henderson. Jesus kept his pressure and found the back of the net with ease.
Eddie Nketiah scored four minutes later against his old side to set up a nervy finish, but Arsenal would hold on and march into the semi-finals.
Arteta was full of praise for Jesus after the match, saying, “I’m so pleased for him. It’s been a long period for him without goals, and today, to score three goals – the three types of goals that he scored – and the many actions he was involved in, he looked very sharp.” He told Sky Sports.
Arteta further said the team can rely on Jesus’ quality: “I think it’s a great thing for him and the team that we can rely on a player of such quality.”
Arsenal will face either Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester United, or Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
