Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan has opened up about his infamous 2010 World Cup penalty miss.
In an Instagram Live session yesterday, the former Black Stars captain spoke about the criticism he experienced after the World Cup.
He told the public that his teammates failed to take responsibility for the penalty, and as the designated penalty taker, he had to step up when his country needed him the most.
He said: “Despite this, my teammates failed to defend me while I was being criticized.
“When the penalty miss happened, I was getting abused and called names because others said I should have left it to others. Why didn’t the others step forward to take it? They were afraid. Cowards. I will say it. They are cowards.”
He also spoke about his allegedly strained relationship with Andre Ayew: “Andre is a good person. He has that genuine love for me, but he has been brainwashed because it benefit people. That is what has brought the so-called rivalry. Me, I am not a rival to anyone.”
Gyan remains one of the finest players to ever come out of Ghana; he is Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals. He played for Udinese, Sunderland, Rennes, and Al Ain.
