The most decorated gymnast in history, Simone Biles has hinted about her retirement in an interview with Sport Illustrated after being named their 2024 Sportsperson of the year on Thursday.
Biles during the interview disclosed that her chances of representing the US during the 2028 Olympics is slim, describing her unlikely return to Los Angeles Olympics as โgreedyโ
In her words: โBecause Iโve accomplished so much, thereโs almost nothing left to do, rather than to just be snobby and to try again, and for what?โ she told the publication. โIโm at a point in my career where Iโm humble enough to know when to be done.โ
โIf you go back, youโll be greedy. Those are the consequences,โ Biles added.
โBut thatโs also your decision to decide. What sacrifices would be made if I go back now? When youโre younger, itโs like, prom, college. Now itโs like, starting a family, being away from my husband. Whatโs really worth it?โ she questioned.
Speaking further, the gymnast described her exquisite performances as normal, refusing to see her impact in the sport world: โI can see it, and I hear it from people, and I see a glimpse of it, but the full magnitude I donโt think Iโve realized just yet.
โI donโt think Iโll realize โtil maybe I retire and look back in a couple years like, Damn, she was good. Because I can see that, but I do it every day. So for me, itโs normal.โ The 27-year-old added
Biles is the first woman in U.S. Olympic gymnastics to win two all-around gold medals since Vera ฤรกslavskรก in 1968.
The win added to her collection as the most decorated U.S. Olympic gymnast in history with nine medals. And at 27 years old, she is also the oldest woman to secure the all-around title since 1952.
If Biles were to compete in the 2028 Games, she would be the only American gymnast to ever qualify for four Olympics โ and she would be 31 years old.
