Manchester United knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup after playing with 10 men for more than 75 minutes.
After a less eventful first half, Manchester United broke the deadlock seven minutes after the restart through club captain Bruno Fernandes.
In the 61st minute, Manchester United’s joy was short-lived as Diogo Dalot was given his marching orders for a rash challenge on Mikel Merino.
Two minutes later, Arsenal capitalized on their numerical advantage and drew level through Gabriel Magalhães.
Arsenal were given a golden opportunity to score in the 69th minute when Kai Havertz made the most of Harry Maguire’s challenge, diving in the box. However, justice prevailed as Martin Ødegaard was denied from the spot by Altay Bayindir.
The missed penalty didn’t appear to affect the Arsenal players’ psychology as they continued to press forward. Arsenal looked more dangerous and the likelier side to win, but the goal never came.
Arsenal came close in the 77th minute when Ødegaard’s cross met Declan Rice in the box, but Bayindir made a fine save to deny the England international.
Arsenal had two chances late in normal time—one for Havertz and another for Rice. Havertz found himself in space in the box but fired over the bar. Meanwhile, Rice dribbled past Manchester United’s defense on the left side of the box and struck with his weaker foot, only to be denied again by Bayindir.
Arsenal had an attempt cleared off the line two minutes into extra time. Havertz played a precise pass to Trossard, whose effort was blocked by Matthijs de Ligt.
After 120 minutes, the game went to penalties. During the warm-ups to the shootout, the confidence in Manchester United players was clear, and they all showed it with their spot kicks converting all their penalties.
Bayindir was the man of the headlines as he saved Havertz’s penalty, diving to the bottom right-hand corner. The Turkish goalkeeper made six crucial saves for the Red Devils and deservedly took home the Man of the Match award.
Manchester United faces Leicester City who is managed by Ruud van Nistelrooy in the next round of the FA Cup.
Van Nistelrooy isn’t new to Manchester United as he has played for the club during his playing career.
