NPF Says Refusal to Assist Officers Under Attack Attracts Jail Term

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) had threatened jail term for anyone who refuses to help a police officer in danger.

This was revealed in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer Adejobi Olumuyiwa in a statement, stating: “Know The Law and Be Guided”

According to Adejobi it is an offence for a person to refuse to assist an officer, who is being assaulted in the discharge of his duties or in danger.

He added that the onlooker will be fined the sum of N100k, or risk being sentenced to three months in jail.
The PPRO also warned that any person who in any manner obstructs or resists any public officer while engaged in the discharge or attempted discharge of the duties of his office, is guilty of a misdemeanour and is liable to imprisonment for two years.

The statement reads in part, “When a person is called upon to aid and assist a police officer who is, while in the discharge of his duty, assaulted or resisted or in danger of being assaulted or resisted, and the person refuses or neglects to aid and assist, the person commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N100,000 or imprisonment for a term of three months or both.”
