CAF Postpones CHAN 2024 to August 2025 Due to Infrastructure Concerns

CAF has announced the postponement of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) to August 1, 2025. The tournament, originally scheduled to take place from February 1 to February 28, will still be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Following assessments conducted by CAF officials in the host nations, it was determined that they are not yet adequately prepared to host the competition. The evaluation highlighted shortcomings in critical infrastructure, including stadiums, training facilities, hospitals, and road networks.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, in an official statement, expressed optimism about the ongoing efforts to upgrade the necessary facilities. He stated, “I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure and facilities will meet the requisite CAF standards for hosting, in August 2025, a very successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (‘CHAN’) Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda 2024.”

The CHAN exclusively features home-based players, and the initial schedule faced criticism for clashing with the football season, potentially disrupting clubs’ league campaigns. However, the new August timeline aligns with the end of most domestic seasons, ensuring minimal interference with league calendars and allowing players to fully commit to their clubs without distractions.
