Lagos Govt Reopens Ebute Ero, Gorodom Markets; Issues Quit Notice to Idumota Traders

The Lagos State Government has directed the reopening of Ebute Ero and Gorodom markets on Lagos Island starting Monday, following an agreement signed by traders to maintain environmental cleanliness .

The decision was announced over the weekend by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, during an inspection tour of the markets. The markets had been closed for over two weeks due to repeated violations of state environmental laws.

In addition to reopening the markets, the government also issued a 48-hour quit notice to traders operating under the Idumota/Ebute Ero Police Post area. Wahab cited concerns over indiscriminate attachment stalls in the area, which pose environmental and safety risks.

The commissioner emphasized the necessity of maintaining cleanliness in all markets to prevent health hazards and the spread of diseases. He noted that the state government remains committed to enforcing environmental regulations to ensure a safer and healthier Lagos.

The inspection also served to assess the level of compliance with recent enforcement actions aimed at restoring key drainage systems, including Iga Modile, Gorodom, Bombata, Olusi, and Alagbafo collectors and tertiary drains in the area.

Traders and market stakeholders have been urged to adhere strictly to environmental laws to prevent further disruptions and ensure sustainable market operations across the state.
