Aston Villa Secure 3-1 First-Leg Advantage Over Club Brugge in Champions League Clash

Aston Villa moved a step closer to a UEFA Champions League quarter-final place after a 3-1 first-leg win over Club Brugge at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Both sides scored within the first twelve minutes of the game. Aston Villa went ahead in the third minute through Leon Bailey. He became just the fourth Jamaican to score in the Champions League after Leicester City legend Wes Morgan, Renaldo Cephas, and Rolando Aarons.

Club Brugge equalized nine minutes later through Maxim De Cuyper.

The match remained level, and it looked like Aston Villa were going to head into the second leg in England with a disappointing result until two late goals within the space of six minutes changed the whole complexion of the tie. An unfortunate own goal by Brandon Mechele, after a teasing cross from Morgan Rogers, was deflected into his own net, followed by a well-taken penalty from Marco Asensio.

It is still all to play for in the second leg on Wednesday, 12th of March.
