Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rejected a N942 billion budget proposed by the National Population Commission –NPC– for the upcoming national census in Nigeria, advocating instead for the utilization of National Youth Serving Corps (NYSC)members, to conduct the exercise, in order to cut cost.
During a meeting with NPC officials at the State House, Tinubu emphasized the need for cost-cutting measures, suggesting NYSC members be deployed to reduce personnel expenses.
He also directed the formation of a committee to review the budget and align it with the government’s financial realities. The President stressed the importance of an accurate census for national planning but insisted that the process must be cost-effective.
He urged biometric data collection, including facial and voice recognition, to enhance accuracy. The last national census was conducted in 2006, with subsequent attempts facing funding and logistical challenges.
While Tinubu remains committed to conducting the exercise, his administration is seeking ways to lower expenses before finalizing a date.
This move though seen as a cost-saving measure amidst economic woes troubling the country, it has however sparked debate regarding the efficiency of employing corps members for such task.
