The governor of Ogun State Price Dapo Abiodun visited Olumo Rock Tourist Center on Wednesday in order for the state to make it a development agenda.
Abiodun disclosed that his administration is committed to making the center the best in Nigeria, harness its potential while it recognizes its deep culture.
In his words: “Our administration is committed to making Olumo Rock, the best tourism destination in Nigeria. As we shift our focus to tourism as a deliberate policy, we aim to harness its immense economic potential.
“During our inspection of the Olumo Rock Tourist Center, we recognized its significance in preserving the deep culture, history, and traditions of Egbaland and Ogun State as a whole, with over 20,000 visitors recorded in 2024.
“Tourism is a vital source of revenue, as seen in nations that have successfully transitioned from oil dependency. We are determined to push the frontiers of tourism development in Ogun State. Olumo Rock, being our foremost tourist attraction, will receive the necessary uplift to attract both local and international visitors.
“If we are not intentional about restoring, maintaining, and protecting our heritage sites, they risk deterioration. These sites serve as a vital link between our past and present, preserving our identity for future generations.
“We appreciate those who have maintained this historic landmark and assure them that Olumo Rock will now receive the best attention. We have identified key areas for improvement, and we will develop a comprehensive plan to ensure it gets the befitting presentation it deserves.
“Our administration has prioritized infrastructure, education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, social development, and agriculture. Now, we are set to make tourism another major focus of our development agenda.” Governor Abiodun added.
Olumo Rock is located in the city of Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. Historically, the rock was a natural fortress for the Egbas during inter-tribal warfare in the 19th century.
It provided protection to the Egba people when they needed it, and is now held in high esteem by the members of the clan.
The Olumo Rock climb is 220 steps in total, but there is a much needed rest point after 120 steps
The centre has a small museum, an art gallery where you can shop souvenirs, a fountain and elevators for those who do not want to hike
